Ophthalmology will be expanded under the ‘Sunetra’ scheme, with proper eye care required on a regular basis

Bhubaneswar, The eye is an invaluable asset. It needs to be taken care of regularly. The government has set up a "Sunetra" scheme to raise awareness among the public about eye care, as well as to prevent eye diseases. A review meeting was held under the chairmanship of Health and Family Welfare Minister Shri Navkishore Das and in the presence of Shri Pradeep Kumar Mohapatra, Additional Chief Secretary, Department of Health and Family Welfare. According to the meeting, the Sunetra scheme provides eye care through mobile vision centers, scheduled vision centers and modular OTs.

In 2017-18, more than 11,000 spectacles were distributed and more than 5 million eyes were screened in 2019-20 and more than 6,000 spectacles were distributed. Eye exams could not be held in 2020-21 due to coughing and school closures. As many as 20 mobile eye testing centers have been set up by December 2020 and will be extended to Anugol, Jagatsinghpur and Nayagarh districts by March 2021.

In 2021-22, mobile eye testing centers will be set up in four districts, Baleshwar, Boudh, Cuttack, Puri, Dhenkanal, Jajpur and Kendrapara districts. More than 27,000 eye treatments have been made available through 2019-20, and more than 3,000 eye treatments have been made possible by December 21-22. Treatment rates have dropped due to the KVD cut.

In 2018-19, the construction of 50 eye health centers has been set up, 50 eye health centers have been set up in 2019-20, 50 eye centers have been set up in 2020-21 and 120 eye health centers have been set up in 2021-22. Similarly, the Odisha State Pharmaceutical Corporation has provided the necessary equipment to 53 group health centers, while by March 2021, all the equipment will be provided to 100 group health centers in the state and by the end of 2021, all group health centers will be equipped.

According to the review meeting, more than 300,000 eye examinations have been carried out in all district headquarters sub-divisional hospitals by 2019-20 and more than 250,000 in 2020-21 through fundraising cameras. On the occasion, Yamini Sadangi, Managing Director, Odisha State Pharmaceutical Corporation, Prof. C.B.K. Mohanty, Special Secretary, Department of Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Ajit Mohanty and senior officials of the department were present.
