Unique feat achieved, 60 meters long bow string girder launched at sambalpur

A Bow String Girder of length 60 meters and weight about 355 tonne has been launched today at a Road Over Bridge (ROB) near Sambalpur by the Construction wing of East Coast Railway.

Launching of such a Bow String Girder at ROB was a challenge. The team of Chief Project Manager (CPM) of Construction Wing of East Coast Railway at Sambalpur completed this job with accurate planning and got the work executed successfully despite lots of constraints and difficulties.

Such type of Girder Launching is first time in the history of Odisha and East Coast Railway. Steel Girder of 60 meter span has been launched. ROB at Khetarajpur is being constructed in lieu of Special Class Level Crossing which is highly congested and has a Train Vehicle Unit (TVU) of 413708 units as per the census taken on Oct 2018.

The construction of ROB is in high demand at this place. Out of 35 piers and 2 abutments, 04 numbers of piers (pier 21-24) belongs to Railway portion and the span above the Railway track is 60m whereas the approach spans are 24m on both sides.

The launching of 60m Bow String Girder was a difficult proposition which has been successfully executed. State govt portion of rest spans are also under construction. Once this ROB gets functional there will be huge relief to the commuters at the Level Crossing of Khetrajpur area. This will facilitate movement of traffic from Remed Chowk of NH6  to Khetrajpur. Preventive maintenance system for rolling stocks installed at belsonda

Cuttack, Preventive maintenance of rolling stock is a need and necessity of the hour. In this concept, the fault is detected before the actual occurrence of failure. An alarm is generated by this system which is about to fail. Necessary action is taken immediately before the actual failure. This ensures safe running of trains. East Coast Railway has installed “Hot Axle Box Detection System” at Belsonda, Boinda & Brundamal Stations over Sambalpur Division.

This is a system based on sensors which gathers information on Rolling Stock conditions like Bearing condition, and Axle Temperature etc., of the trains. In this system, the proximity sensors are installed on the wayside stations detects the presence of incoming trains. The temperature sensors measure the temperature of axles. It compares the temperature record of each Axle with the reference temperature which is set in the system. If the measured temperature exceeds the set temperature, system generates alarm to the control office on real time basis. Based on it, the control may take the necessary action.

The main function of the system is to receive the data from sensor, send the data to the microcontroller unit, to web cloud server from the main server. This will show as a live data displayed at Control Room.

The data can be viewed and monitored through computer as well as through mobile. This System will generate ‘SMS’ as well as email alert and generate “Visual Alarm” in the main display screen.

This system will prevent any enroute failure of rolling stock, which if happens, leads to disruption of traffic and loss of punctuality for passenger trains. BY this system, once a high temperature is detected, the particular wagon or coach will be detached at the nearest station.

Automated coach washing plant by East Coast Railway at Puri Coaching Depot

Bhubaneswar, East Coast Railway commissions Automatic Coach Washing Plant at Puri Coaching Depot. This Coaching Depot senses the motion of incoming train, helps to minimize time, water & manpower to complete the washing process of entire trains effectively. The plant operates automatically upon sensing the movement of the train rake through the unit.

A full rake will take maximum 5-7 minutes for complete washing. Washing takes place in many stages. In the first stage, pre-wetting is done by treated water followed by detergent spray and water brushing. It is then followed by disc brush cleaning followed by soft water cleaning. At the end, RO spray is done.

The Automatic Coach Washing Plant is equipped with a captive Effluent treatment plant where the used water is treated and the final discharge from the ETP meets the environmental norms. The unit has a water treatment plant, ETP, Control Room for central monitoring. It uses vertical & disc brushes, high pr nozzle, and air blower. Due to the automation and efficiency of the plant, it is expected that this will lead to save revenue in external washing cost for the depot.

The plant utilizes less water compared to manual washing resulting into a savings of huge million liters of fresh water every year. It was commissioned in November, 2020. The Automatic Coach Washing Plant is an environment friendly and cost- effective option and a great step towards automation in train maintenance.

L&T 3D Prints Entire 2-Floor Building In India

Chennai: L&T Construction, the construction arm of the $21 billion Larsen & Toubro, on Thursday announced it has successfully 3D-printed a 700 sq feet building (ground plus first floor) with reinforcement for the first time in India.

Using a fully automated 3D printer, L&T 3D printed the building at their Kanchipuram facility with a special, in-house developed concrete mix, using indigenously available regular construction materials. The building was printed with both vertical reinforcement bar and horizontal distributors using welded mesh that satisfy provisions in the Indian Codes and optimise the cost of construction.

The company said that except for the horizontal slab members, the entire building structure was 3D printed ‘Cast in Situ’ at the job site in an ‘open to sky’ environment within 106 printing hours.

“3D concrete printing is one of the technology disruptors with the potential to radically redefine construction methodologies and I am extremely happy that by demonstrating our growing expertise in 3D printing, we are well positioned to push the boundaries of automated robotic construction,” said M.V. Satish, Whole Time Director & Senior Executive Vice President (Buildings).

“3D printing will not only accelerate the pace of construction but also significantly improve build quality.” The feat is important as the country is aggressively pursuing the objective of creating 60 million houses under the ‘Housing for All by 2022’ programme, the company said.

3D printing is a process, in which the material is printed under computer control to build a 3-dimensional product, typically layer by layer.

It is predominantly used in manufacturing industries to print rapid prototypes, complex shapes and small batch production using special polymers and metal alloys etc. In November 2019, the L&T team had 3D-printed a 240 sq feet 1 BHK.

East Coast Railways commissioned EOTT system to run trains without guards.

End of Train Telemetry (EOTT) is a cutting edge technology across the globe for operation of trains without brake van and guard which is being adopted by Indian Railways. Operation of trains with EOTT is an ambitious project of Railways for implementation in fast track mode.

East Coast Railway has played a pioneering role in leading the way for successful field trial for the first time in Indian Railways in a freight train with EOTT between Talcher-Paradeep section. Electric Loco Shed, Angul has commissioned and tested the product to make this trial successful.

End of Train Telemetry (EOTT) system mainly consists of HOT (Head of Train) fitted in locomotive and EOT (End of Train) fitted on last vehicle of the train. EOTT has Global Positioning System (GPS) module to indicate location of the train, Global System for Mobile communication (GSM) module to transfer data to server and radio device for communication & control between HOT (front unit) & EOT (rear unit). High Visibility Marker light flasher device in EOT is provided with automatic switching ON & OFF based on the ambient light condition.

Break Power pressure of the last vehicle of the train is displayed to Train Driver in the HOT display in cab of the locomotive. Train Driver can confirm Break Power pressure drop in the train up to last vehicle during application of air brake by observing Break Power pressure of last vehicle remotely in the HOT display. It has provision to apply emergency brake from last vehicle of the train by opening a valve in EOT remotely from the cab of locomotiveIt has the provision for automatic application of train emergency air brakes also from rear when emergency train air brake is applied by Loco Pilot in the cab and the simultaneous application of brake from front and rear will reduce the braking distance and time for controlling the train. In case of train parting confirmed by Loco Pilot, emergency brake from EOT, if required by Train Driver can be applied in order to bring the rear portion to an early halt. These available provisions will boost the confidence of Loco Pilots during running of trains with EOTT.

This technology will eliminate the requirement of Brake Van and practice of employing guard in the train. One additional wagon can be connected in place of Brake Van thereby enhancing the scope of earning revenue.
