Rs 200 crore scheme, Kalinga Studio will be developed as a modern cinema studio

Bhubaneswar, The government has decided to develop the Bhubaneswar-based historic Kalinga Studio, which is well-known in the film industry, as a state-of-the-art 'State of the Art Cinema Studio'. A high-level meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Suresh Chandra Mohapatra today approved the restructuring plan of about Rs 200 crore. Considering Kalinga Studio's contribution to the film industry and its future growth, Chief Secretary Shri Mohapatra approved the redevelopment plan and directed it to be developed as a competitive business studio.


Mr. Mohapatra also directed the Industries Department to make the studio a tourist and social attraction center. The tourism and social institutions will keep the studio busy with cultural imprint services; "It will also increase the revenue of the studio," he said. Notably, last Sunday, the Chief Secretary himself directed the department to set up a field-level situation for Kalinga Studios and prepare a restructuring plan. Mr. Hemant Kumar Sharma, Chief Secretary, Department of Industries, presented the plan for discussion at the high-level meeting held at the State Public Service Building.

Mr. Sharma said Kalinga Studios has an exciting business history. It also has the potential to develop into a state-of-the-art center for the present and the future. Based on all these resources and potential, a new restructuring plan has been developed. Mr. Pradeep Kumar Jena, Development Commissioner, directed the special attention to be paid to the proposed restructuring, creation of new employment opportunities through it, revenue collection methods to make the studio self-reliant and sustainable. Participating in the discussion, Sanjay Kumar Singh, Secretary, Administration for Technical Education and Strategy Development, said that Oriya youths studying at the Bijupatnaik Cinema and Doordarshan Institute in Cuttack have achieved great success in the 'creative entertainment industry'.

They have a reputation in various states of the country. This skilled human resource in the state will be especially helpful in the development of modern cinema studios. Mr. Sharma, Chief Secretary, Department of Industries, said that the present Kalinga Studio has recording laboratories, indoor shooting areas, open gardens, temples and huts. It now collects about Rs 4 lakh a month in revenue. It was decided at the meeting that three new zones would be set up in the new modern studio.

Zone-1 will have an indoor shooting floor, a shooting room, a filmtech zone, a business area, and an open courtyard. Zone 2 will have outdoor shooting facilities, theme vibe shooting parks, children’s zones, fortress views, ice zones and adventure show venues. Zone-3 will have a dining area, dining facilities for filmmakers, and a social program center. Mr. Sharma also said that some of the existing buildings and facilities would be preserved for the studio's heritage.

The redevelopment plan will be implemented through eco. Chief Secretary Shri Mohapatra directed the government to start the tender process and complete the field work before the monsoon. Odisha Film Development Corporation Chairman Shri Satyabrata Tripathi, Development Commissioner Shri Pradeep Kumar Jena, Chief Secretary, Industries, Shri Hemant Sharma, Chief Secretary, Finance, Shri Ashok Kumar Meena, ECO Chairman and Managing Director, Nitin Vanudas Jawale, Industries Senior officials of the concerned departments, including Shri Shuvendra Kumar Nayak, attended the meeting.
