English-Oriya dictionary to be prepared in new style, MoU between Canada, Canada

Bhubaneswar, As the importance of the Oriya language in the field of education and research is increasing, it has been decided to prepare an excellent English-Oriya dictionary. The proposal from the Canadian Institute of Cancer has been approved by the Executive Committee of the Institute for Oriya Studies and Research. Since most of the English dictionaries now available are less than two decades old and many new English words have already arrived, a new English-Oriya dictionary will be developed in view of the widespread use of these.

As Oriyas have started using new English words in line with the world, many of the written and spoken common English words used in Odisha are not easily available. As the national education policy encourages the mother tongue and provides the opportunity to write nationally higher education and various competitive examinations through Oriya, a refined and accurate English Oriya dictionary is needed, said the president and former ambassador of the institute.

The fund, which will be made up of more than a million words, will be funded by members for the first phase. The state government, various institutions and philanthropists and people of all languages will be requested to pay the required funds. A memorandum of understanding with Kansas will be signed soon as the goal is to complete the work within a year. In addition, a special media dictionary on English and various topics from Oriya, a special media dictionary will be prepared in view of the widespread use of Hindi and English words in the media.

In addition, a delegation from the Oriya Studies and Research Institute (ODIHR) held a delegation to discuss the establishment of the Oriya University and the implementation of the National Education Policy-2020. A number of important decisions have been taken, including a seminar on the subject and the holding of the Seventh National Language Conference in North Odisha next March, said Dr Subrata Kumar Pristi, a member of the organization.
