Bhubaneswar, Minister for Commerce and Transport, Planning and Coordination Padmanabh Behera has unveiled the Boat Information and Management System (BIMS), an online system for registering and renewing all boats operated by inland waterways. Inaugurating the event at a function organized by the Department of Commerce and Transport at Kharbel Bhavan, Minister Behera said the state government has enacted the Odisha Boat Rules - 2006 for safe travel on inland waterways in the state.
Accordingly, boat maneuvers are currently being carried out manually. People were having a lot of trouble with the manual method. Online method 'With BMS, owners can stay at home and register their boats, renewals, licenses and other services easily online. Minister Behera said they would get all the information about the boat registration and renewal process on their mobile phones. Today, he presented one with an online registration certificate.
Madhusudan Padhi, the department's chief administrative secretary, said the state government had developed the five processes in collaboration with the Commerce and Transport Department in collaboration with the NAIC. All boats can be aggregated in one system by Beams. This will make it easier for government employees and the general public to access the information of any boat. It can be used by district officials to improve the system. With this application, boat owners can be notified via SMS before the registration and renewal of the boat expires.
He said the online service, run by the Directorate of Port and Inland Waterways, would be expanded in the future. The function was attended by Additional Secretary to the Department Laxmidhar Behera, Director, Port and Inland Water Transport, Padmalochan Raul, Minister’s Personal Secretary Manmohan Barik, Divisional War Secretary Shri Devdatta Jena, NHAIC officials and senior officials.
